The CEO of Walmart announced that the retail giant will be closed on Thanksgiving.
This will be the fourth consecutive year that Walmart, usually open 24/7, will close for the holiday on the fourth Thursday in November and the day before Black Friday.
Thanksgiving this year is Thursday, Nov. 23.
“Thanksgiving is such a special day during a very busy season. We want you to spend that day at home with family and loved ones — whether it is eating a great meal, watching some football or whatever your traditions are. We all have so much to be thankful for this year and I am especially thankful for the opportunity to work with all of you,” said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart on LinkedIn.
Walmart first closed on Thanksgiving in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 stores closed again. Walmart said it was closing stores “as a thank you to associates for their continued hard work during the pandemic.”
In the recent past, it has become more common for retailers to be closed on the holiday. Black Friday, considered to be the biggest shopping day of the year, has lost some of its punch with holiday sales starting long before that and more online shopping.
Last year, in addition to Walmart, stores closed on Thanksgiving included Aldi, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Costco, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Bath & Body Works, Sam’s Club, Target, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Trader Joe’s and Old Navy.
In 2022, BJ’s Wholesale Club was closed on the holiday for the 16th consecutive year.
In 2021, Target announced that its store will be closed on the holiday from then on.
Walmart has already launched a 2023 holiday sale.
Walmart Deals — Holiday Kickoff — is on through 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. Prices on thousands of products are discounted by up to 60% including toys, electronics, home goods, outdoor living, furniture, sports equipment and clothing.
