ST. MARYS — The Footlighters of Elk County, a community theatre nonprofit organization that has been operating for more than 60 years, are back with another performance for the community to enjoy.
Under the direction of Marty Kim, “Escanaba in da Moonlight” is being presented at the Footlighters Playhouse at the St. Marys Moose Lodge today and Saturday and Oct. 5, 6 and 7, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The upstairs area of the Moose Lodge on Erie Avenue became the Footlighters Playhouse in 2022, and the Moose has been very supportive of the organization and its efforts.
The topic behind this show is one very relevant to the area — hunting. Footlighters volunteer Valerie North said the story “spins a hilarious take of humor, horror and heart.”
“When the Soady clan reunites for the opening day of deer season at the family’s Upper Peninsula camp, 35-year-old Reuben Soady brings with him the infamous reputation of being the oldest Soady in the history to never bag a buck,” she explained. “Reuben goes to any and all lengths to remove himself from the wrong end of the family record book.”
Mike Ames, who has been directing and acting in shows with the Footlighters for nearly 30 years, plays Albert Soady in “Escanaba in da Moonlight.”
Albert is the patriarch of the Soady family, “quite the storyteller and a protector of camp traditions and history,” according to The Footlighters of Elk County Community Theater Facebook page, which offers a photo and description of each character.
Besides enjoying the show, this is also a great opportunity to support a longtime organization and check out the local theater scene and everything Elk County has to offer, said Ames.
The cast also includes Jeff Stefanak as Jimmer Negamanee, Brandon Kowalski as Reuben Soady, Mark Yankovich as Ranger Tom Treado, Tim Weidow as Remnar Soady, Holly Kim and Kim Kim as Wolf Moon Dance Soady and David Phillips as Great Gramps Alfonse Soady.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, the Elk County Council on the Arts gallery in Ridgway, The Old Brickyard in Johnsonburg, the St. Marys Moose Lodge and at www.eventbrite.com.
