VFW Post 212 and Frances Sherman VFWA urge youth to enter this year’s essay contests.
Both contests — Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen — have an Oct. 31 deadline. All rules and applications can be found at vfw.org under community-youth and education or at VFW Post 212 as well as at local schools. Judging is done by an impartial group of judges. Spelling, punctuation, sticking with the theme and neatness are all considered.
The theme for the 2023-24 year of the Voice of Democracy contest, open to students in grades nine through 12, is “What Are The Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?”
Record an original 3- to 5-minute audio essay on a flash drive or other electronic device along with a typed essay and completed entry form to your school/group competition or VFW Post for judging.
The theme for the 2023-24 year Patriot’s Pen contest is “How Are You Inspired By America?”
Patriot’s Pen is open to students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Original essays of 300 to 400 words should be typed in English with no color or graphics.
