SMETHPORT — The McKean County Conservation District, and the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will host a free cover crop demo day 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at the McKean County 911 Center, 17175 Route 6.
Cover crops are any crops grown to cover the soil and may be incorporated later into the soil for enrichment. Cover crops cut fertilizer costs, reduce the need for herbicides and other pesticides, improve yields by enhancing soil health, prevent soil erosion, conserve soil moisture and protect water quality. During this field day participants will view a recently planted cover crop. Participants will also learn more about the benefits of cover crops as mentioned above as well as NRCS’S Farm Bill-related programs for cover crops. A free lunch will be included.
Contact the McKean County Conservation District at (814) 887-4025 or by email at sdthompson@mckeancountypa.org no later than Oct. 17 to register.
