A bizarre scene unfolded at an airport in India where 22 snakes of various species and a chameleon were seized by custom agents after the animals were discovered inside a check-in bag that belonged to a female passenger who arrived in India from Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia, according to news sources.
It appeared to be an attempted smuggling operation where the multiple species of snakes were also of various sizes, according to reports from FOX5 and CBS News.
India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs shared pictures and video footage via their social media page, which captured the large snakes packed into transparent plastic containers that looked as if it was sealed with duct tape.
The agents at Chennai Airport came across the wildlife animals while searching the traveler’s luggage as she passed through customs. The animals were seized under the Parliament of India’s Wildlife Protection Act, which protects plants and animal species, much like the ones attempted to be smuggled, according to reports.
But this isn’t the first time wildlife has attempted to be smuggled into the country. Back in January, customs agents seized 45 ball pythons, three marmosets, three-star tortoises and eight corn snakes from a passenger’s luggage at the same airport. India Express reported that those animals were deported back to Bangkok, according to reports.
