KANE — The Bradford boys golf team finished second at the District 8/9 Class 3A championships, held Wednesday at Kane Country Club.
The Owls’ team score of 275 was runner-up to St. Marys (335), while DuBois finished third with 381. Individually, Bradford’s Jake Franz shot a 76 and sits in second place ahead of Saturday’s second tournament leg.
Franz trails only Benito Taromina from District 8’s Alderdice, who shot a 75 on Wednesday. Eight individual golfers remain, and after another 18 holes on Saturday, a champion will be crowned and the top two finishers will advance to the PIAA state championships.
“We didn’t shoot well as a team, but (Franz) continued his good play with three birdies and nine pars,” Bradford coach Travis Faulkner said. “I have confidence in Jake that he will return to the PIAA meet.”
Franz competed at the PIAA meet last year after finishing runner-up in District 9. He’ll tee off sometime early Saturday morning in his pursuit for a district title.
Other Bradford golfers Wednesday included Brayden Wilt (98), Chase Wineberg (100), Mitchell Brinsky (101) and Alex Pilon (105).
St. Marys was led by Vinnie Lenze, who turned in a 79 to power the Dutch’s team title. Anthony Nedzinski and Vince Azzato each advanced to Saturday’s second round, as well, each shooting 85.
“The match was played under very wet and soggy conditions, but we managed to play some good golf and secure a district title,” St. Marys coach Bob Bauer said.
Ridgway finished fourth in the Class AA team competition, while Cameron County was fifth.
