RIDGWAY — Manny Diaz and Leo Paterniti led the Bradford boys to wins over Elk County Catholic and Ridgway, as Diaz cruised to a first-place finish in 16:56 on the 3.1-mile course.
Diaz bested his winning time from last year by 21 seconds, while Paterniti finished third in 18:06.
Ridgway’s Eli Schreiber was second in 17:54 and ECC’s Julian Funaki (18:53) and Adam Straub (19:04) took the next two places, respectively. Bradford’s Ian Pilon was sixth in 19:45 and teammate Joe Caruso was seventh in 20:16.
“We got Pilon back (Tuesday) and he shook off some rust,” Bradford coach Tom Tessena said. “We will need him at full strength for Districts. Sophomore Brayden Frair is getting better and should be able to run next Tuesday if he keeps progressing. Brayden is a big part of our team and crucial for a good District outcome.”
Marcus Terwilliger placed 12th in 20:46 for the Owls, while Danny Marasco was 17th in 22:58. The varsity team will compete at the PIAA Foundation Cross Country Championship at Hershey on Saturday.
““This is a big race and is held on the PA state meet course, so it is a good opportunity to run at this site,” Tessena said. “Our guys are looking forward to this challenge, particularly Manny Diaz.”
The Fretz Middle School team also recorded its ninth and 10th victories of the season, led by Evan Troisi (10:45) and Kadyn Tessena (11:14), who finished first and second, respectively.
Evan Soto (11:40), Maverick Smith (12:11) and Tyler Simmons (12:24) placed fourth, fifth and sixth for Fretz. Owen Blouser was eighth in 12:56 and Eddie Youmans was 10th in 13:28.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
ECC’s Neubert tops field against Bradford, Ridgway
RIDGWAY — Elk County Catholic’s Grace Neubert topped the field in 21:45, as the Bradford girls traveled to meet ECC and Ridgway on what will be the District 9 meet course.
No team score was kept due to Ridgway and ECC’s inability to field full teams. Korie Dixon and Caitlyn Taylor finished fourth and fifth individually for the Lady Owls, as Dixon made her anticipated return to the lineup.
“It was nice to have (Dixon) back racing,” Bradford coach Mark Kelley said. “Her and (Taylor) ran a hard first mile and then cruised the last two miles. These two together make our team much stronger.”
Abbigail Schleicher, Leila Bines and Elisa Hayden crossed the line together as the next three runners.
“Again, they ran a very nice hard first mile and a controlled pace the last two,” Kelley said.
Mayla Smith, Joleen Weimer, Jennifer Bouquin and Madison Vinelli were the next four across the line.
“This was a good chance for the girls to run on the District 9 course,” Kelley said. “We are not going to the Ridgway Invitational this year so this was our only chance to run on the district course. The weather was nice and the girls were able to get a good workout in.
“We have a pretty big meet Saturday in Carlisle so this was a good day to run the first mile hard, relax for the next mile, push the long hill and tempo the last mile.”
The Lady Owls middle school team picked up two victories against ECC and Ridgway, as Kendyl Cruz crossed the finish line first in 12:31 on the 1.7-mile course.
Rylan Terwilliger was second in 13:01, Brianna Haven third in 13:10, Addison Benson fourth in 14:08, Anna Benedict fifth in 14:15, Jackie Sipko sixth in 14:30, Samantha McCaul was seventh in 14:43, Oliva Funk was ninth in 16:00, Brooke Clouser was 10th in 16:01, Madison Ronan was 11th in 16:36, Regan Dillaman was 12th in 19:03 and Shyla Williams was 13th in 21:05.
