September is a busy and beautiful time in this region of Pennsylvania, and events are scheduled throughout the month to take advantage of the end of summer and beginning of autumn.
At 1 p.m. today, a “Worry Free Walk” will take place at Kinzua Bridge State Park. Experience a nature hike on the 1.5-mile loop General Kane Trail, exploring the flora and fauna along the way. Dress for the weather, and meet in front of the visitor center.
Today through Monday will be a family fun weekend at Twin Lakes Recreation Area in Wilcox, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. There will be open mic nights held today and Saturday, as well as a cornhole tournament, touch-a-truck, glow wiffleball, light up the lake and a scavenger hunt.
The Flickerwood Fall Fest, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, at Flickerwood Wine Cellars and Cocktail Lounge, 309 Flickerwood Road in Kane. The event is seeking competitors for the Mac & Cheese competition. Other activities include how to throw an ax with a throwing instructor, then compete against friends, a wine competition, cornhole competition, enjoy CJ’s BBQ, and live music from Marshmellow Overcoat. Also on Saturday, the John C. Roche VFW Post 212 will host the 14th Annual William Runyan-Reba Maben Scholarship Golf Tournament beginning at 1 p.m. at Pine Acres Country Club. The event will begin in a scramble format with a shotgun start. There will be three flights with cash prizes for first and second place. After the golf event a steak or chicken dinner, followed by prize awards. The cost of the tournament is $75 per player, or $65 for members, with four person teams. At noon Sunday, a program on “Intro to Geocaching” will be held on the General Kane Trail at Kinzua Bridge State Park. There are a limited number of units available; call the park office at (814) 778-5467 if you need a unit.
At noon Monday, an introduction to archery will be held at Kinzua Bridge State Park. Targets and bows will be provided.
Mark the calendars for Friday, Sept. 9, for the Kane Senior Citizens Expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kane Community Center at 46 Fraley Street in Kane. State, county and local exhibitors will be on hand to distribute information and answer questions about health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, fire safety, financial planning, fraud protection, government services, hunting/fishing, and personal safety at the free event. There will also be door prizes, health screenings and a lunch provided.
BCPAC’s Fall Music & Arts Festival, takes place Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Festival Way in downtown Bradford. Enjoy a wide variety of live musical entertainment throughout the day, shop from local artisans, food vendors and more. Bidding will also take place for this year’s Heart of the Arts competition. Also on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m., Ride the Rail Trail at the Knox & Kane Rail Trail, a great place to ride a bike and enjoy nature. Join a park educator for a bike ride from the park to Mount Jewett and back. Helmets are required and participants should expect to bike about 8 miles on a flat, crushed gravel surface.

Or, head over to watch the drag races at the St. Marys Municipal Airport, 159 Cessna Road, Sunday, Sept. 11, from noon to 5 p.m. The St. Mary’s Airport Authority will present Airport Drag Races with heads-up style drag races to benefit the airport — NHRA rules will apply.
At the Bradford Area Public Library, at 6 p.m. Sept. 12, a documentary on ardent abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens will be shown. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania in the 1860s. The Thaddeus Stevens Society commissioned an hour-long documentary detailing his pivotal role in the progress of our commonwealth and the nation.
Also at the Bradford Area Public Library, adult programming will include an author visit with Ann Hajdu Hultberg at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 in the library’s community room. She will discuss her recently released book “Something To Hold On To.”
The book is a compilation of stories depicting “the things we hold on to, whether it is an actual object like rosary beads or a prayer card, or intangible things such as love, our realizations, or a sense of humor. It’s what we hold on to through both good and bad times,” stated Hultberg.
