9-8-8 — CALL BEFORE YOU QUIT: The Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has recently made a change which provides Pennsylvanians with a new, easier way of quickly connecting with behavioral or mental health crisis services.
As of July 16, individuals who are struggling may call, text or chat with 9-8-8 to be directly connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Callers can also be connected with the Veterans Crisis Line for assistance as well.
9-8-8 can be utilized by anyone, at any time because Lifeline services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no cost to the caller. Callers will reach professionally trained support individuals who are able to provide council, listen and offer advise to those considering self-harm, suicide or suffering from any mental health need for themselves or for a loved one.
When an individual dials 9-8-8 they will be connected to professionals within 60 seconds, if not the call will be re-routed to an alternative call center to be answered immediately. Pennsylvania currently operates three regional Lifeline call centers. If all three call centers are occupied, your call will then be re-routed to the national back-up network, where professionals will be able to assess the crisis and connect the caller with the appropriate local assistance.
The previous Lifeline phone number, (800) 273-8255 will remain available.
