Did you know, that although the French can take full credit for popularizing “French fries,” referring to a deep-fried slice of strip of potato, in the mid-1700s, it was actually the Belgian people who lay claim to the invention of fries.
According to a manuscript written by Joseph Gerard, residents of the Meuse Valley in Belgium created “French fries” out of necessity. The Belgium people of the Meuse Valley ate a diet primarily of fish, however during the winter, when their water sources would freeze, the idea of slicing potatoes like fish filets and frying them in hot fat was invented.
As the tale goes, French fries were introduced to America, upon the return of World War I soldiers. Stationed in Dinant, Belgium, the soldiers reportedly took a liking to the local finger food known as “pommes frites” so much so they brought the recipe home with them.
So Wednesday, whether you consume home-made, crinkle-cut, curly, English style or McDonald’s famous fries just make sure to have a happy National French Fry Day!
