MMM…DOH’NUTS. Oh, those beautiful pastries, the ones with the hole in the middle, what a treat. And, for Homer Simpson— even after a nightmare involving him being sentenced to death for eating too many, on the Planet of Doughnuts — they are a favorite food. He woke up and went to eat doughnuts, in case you were wondering, muttering “MMM…Donuts.”
Why do we care? Well, because this week is now considered world-wide Donut Week. It was a national holiday in the UK, but is applicable around the world now, according to NationalToday.com
Fun fact: Did you know that the first donuts did not have a hole in the center? Nope. There are two who claim the invention of the hole. First, the Pennsylvania Dutch started poking holes in their pastries to allow for more even frying. A sailor from Maine, around the same time (mid-1800s), did the same to his mother’s doughnuts.
According to a plaque in Rockport, Maine, Hanson Gregory will forever be remembered for his contribution of, well, a hole, and to some, the plaque suggests that in America fame comes from inventing nothing.
Rewind, or is it now Fast forward, anyway, Krispy Kreme, home of the warm and gooey glazed doughnut, released a real-life version of Homer Simpson’s enormous pink-iced-with-sprinkles-donut a few years ago. We guess after hearing the cartoon character murmur, “MMM, donuts,” enough times (over 100 from what we read), it was bound to happen. Unfortunately, these were only available in Australia, “D’oh!”
Though, there are plenty of do-it-yourself recipes to help guide bakers who want to create their own, MMM…Donuts.
