Local teens and tweens have several options to hold summer boredom at bay.
At the Bradford Area Public Library, Pitt-Bradford professor, Orin James is offering a classic dissection series for all local families from July 27 — 29. The lab will run from 6 — 8 p.m. each evening. Children under the age of 13, who are taking part in dissections must have adult supervision.
Participants will learn the anatomy of the brain, eye, and heart. Interested individuals are urged to register early, as the spots are limited for this free series.
Pitt-Bradford Assistant Director of Art Programming, Courtney Mealy, and library volunteer, Marie Troskosky, have designed a wonderfully creative art series for local teens and tweens. Register for any individual project, or sign-up for all three — Patch Poetry: July 14, Linoleum Block Printing: July 21, and Journal Making: July 28. Each art session runs from 4 to 6 p.m. While the workshops are free, registration is necessary. Call 814-362-6527, or visit the library’s Circulation Desk to sign up.
Teens and tweens are also invited to join the library’s two book clubs: Middle Ground for students in 6th through 8th grade (meets monthly on the first Thursday) or the Teen Book Club, designed for older students (meets monthly on the third Tuesday). Groups meet at 5 p.m. and enjoy pizza while discussing their monthly books.
The library has not forgotten its younger patrons. While the Children’s Summer Reading program is only two weeks this year, it will be loaded with fun. Youth are invited to the kick-off party at 11 a.m. on July 5 when Jeffini returns to the Bradford Library with his Sail the Seven Seas program which features fabulous ocean-themed magic, audience participation, and Jeffini’s crazy puppet friends. The show will include facts about the seven oceans of the world, sea life, and ocean travel — all based on children’s literature.
On July 9, Tracey Burgess will visit with her miniature horse, Percy. Youth will be treated to a story time and crafts during this 11 a.m. program. Families are also invited to register their children for the Summer Reading Workshops. Grades 1 – 3 will meet July 6 and 13, Grades 4 -6 will meet July 7 and 14, lastly Pre-school and Kindergarten students will have their day on July 12.
Another fun event for local families will be a story walk in downtown Bradford from July 11 through July 17. The story walk will feature the book, The Magic Fish by Freya Littledale. Families can obtain the story walk booklet from the Circulation Desk beginning July 5 and can submit completed booklets to the library by July 18.
The Bradford Chamber of Commerce is donating a gift certificate to one randomly chosen youth. Other winners will receive a free book. Youth can also submit their story walk booklets on Monday, July 18 during BCPAC’s ‘theater in the park’ production of The Fisherman and His Wife at 11 a.m. at Callahan Park.
