ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — St. Bonaventure rising senior Darion Gregory has earned a pair of prestigious academic honors by being named to both the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team as well as the CoSIDA Academic All-District Cross Country/Track & Field Team, officials announced Thursday.
Gregory, a native of Smethport, is now one of the most decorated Bonnies student-athletes in recent memory after previously being named to the Atlantic 10’s All-Academic Team for both cross country and indoor track as well earlier this year.
The Academic All-Conference and All-District teams include student-athletes who were selected based on their athletic and academic performance. To be nominated, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for their entire academic career.
Gregory was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 1 Team for his cumulative 4.0 GPA as an environmental studies major and history as a top performer for the Bonnies running program. The District 1 Team includes cross country / track and field student-athletes from the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Gregory is one of 11 honorees from District 1, joining Jonathan Gonzalez of LIU, Acer Iverson, Charles Lego, Matthew Pereier and Lance Ward of Harvard, Robert Miranda and Juma Sei of Yale, Michael Peppy of Canisius, Dan Schaffer of Binghamton and Seth Weprin of Dartmouth.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-June.
Gregory becomes the first St. Bonaventure men’s cross country/track student-athlete named to a CoSIDA Academic All-District team. The program began in 2001-02.
On the conference side, Gregory joins fellow A-10 standouts Isaac Elliott and Collin Ebling of Duquesne, Antony Misko and Brandon Hall of Fordham, Xavier Shirley of George Mason, Logan Broedner of GW, Luke Jaciw-Zurakowsky of La Salle, Lucas Honohan of UMass, Stephen Cirella of Rhode Island and Michael Welde of Saint Joseph’s as the honorees.
Gregory’s name is written throughout the St. Bonaventure cross country/track record books: He owns the cross country 5K record time of 15:40 and also stands 10th in 8K (26:36.1) and seventh in 10K (33:15).
In track, he has outdoor top-10 times for the 800 (2:02.40, eighth), 1500 (4:08.79, fifth), 3000 (9:14.37, fourth) and 5000 (16:04.37, eighth). In indoor, he has top-10 program times for the 800 (2:09.22, fourth), 1000 (2:42.22, third), mile (4:41.73, fifth) and 4000 medley relay (11:07.74, first).
The CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America as well as the Atlantic 10 All-Academic teams are nominated by and voted on by the sports information directors of the region and the conference, respectively.
