FIRESTONE. In the Tuesday, May 10 edition of The Bradford Era there was a feature photo on the front page of the old Firestone ad, located on the side of a brick building at 20 Congress St. in Bradford.
An enlightened reader and Bradford resident, Geraldine Crooks called in to report the ad was actually for the company PUR-OSAN from the 1950s. Also seen in the print, faintly, are the words “Germicide Webbing Agent Company and Corrosion Inhibitor.” Crooks provided this information from memory; she remembers the ad from when it was new to the area, as she worked on the first flood of the building in the 1950s as a young woman.
DRAWING DAY. Drawing is an artform with close ties to humanities’ history as even non-verbal cavemen drew hunting scenes on cave walls. We honor and recognize this deep history and connection with drawing yearly on May 16.
The earliest drawings recorded were carvings discovered in ancient caves in Europe since around 10,000 B.C. Before paper, ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Greeks drew intricate figures and scenes from their daily lives on clay/brick and rock. In later years, yet still before paper, people used animal skins and wooden planks to write, draw and paint.
FUN FACTS about drawing. Did you know that the artist Picasso drew before he even walked and his first word was “lapiz,” which means pencil in Spanish.
Famed artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting while he was alive, “The Red Vineyard.”
A more contemporary fun drawing fact, Bob Ross was never actually paid for his show and “happy little trees.” He kept himself afloat by selling art supplies.
So take out a sketchbook and pencil/pen or a tablet and stylus and doodle away today.
