The Bradford Area School District heard from Business Manager Judy Bodamer pertaining to the 2022-2023 budget, as well as from a representative of Nutrition Inc. during their Monday night board meeting.
Bodamer presented the preliminary 2022-2023 budget, however it was noted that there would be no tax increase. According to Superintendent Katherine Pude, the school district has only raised taxes once in the past 21 years. The preliminary budget is expected to change once the district receives their final figures from the state of Pennsylvania for their Basic Education Funding.
Melissa Kingen, of Nutrition Inc. presented the renewal of the school district’s contract and operating budget. The board approved the operating budget as presented which will extend the original contract with Nutrition Inc. from June 30, 2022 until June 20, 2023.
The board granted permission for the sale of property from the County Repository at 81 Williams St. to Crystal Smoker, as well as 275 South Ave. to Sufficient Home, LLC. The board then declined the sale of 23 and 290 East Main St. because they have been “deemed to be beyond the scope of renovations.”
Permission from the board was sought for the overnight trip of the district’s Envirothon Team to travel to Mifflinsburg to compete in the Envirothon State Competition on Wednesday, May 25 — permission was granted.
The 2022-2023 contract and board resolution for support service from Seneca Highlands IU9 was approved.
The board approved the resignation of Bus Driver Kevin McMurtrie, who will retire effective June 2 with the school district’s appreciation for his 25 years of service; Assistant Principal of Floyd C. Fretz Middle School Nicholas LaBella, effective June 30, after 5 years of service; General Aide Debra Pradhan, who will retire effective June 2 after 12 years of service.
The Board also approved the transfer of Melissa Merry from her position as the assistant principal of George G. Blaisdell Elementary to the assistant principal at Fretz effective July 1, as well as PC Field Technician Michael Brown, who will become the senior network technician, effective July 1, with a salary of $50,000 a year. Leaves requested were also approved during Monday night’s meeting for Matthew Cleveland from May 9 through Aug. 9 and Gary Larson from May 26 through June 2.
Pude recognized and congratulated Mike Erickson, for being named the D-9 Athletic Director of the year, as well as student Maddie Emerson, who received the Ray Uhler YMCA Outstanding Youth Award and Jan Russell for receiving the Excellence in Childcare Award at the YMCA Community Awards Breakfast.
The revision of Policy #218 Student Discipline and Policy #246 Student Wellness were approved as presented by Assistant Superintendent Sam Johnson during the Monday meeting.
Before closing the meeting Pude noted the tremendous amount of musical events set to close out the school year: at 7 p.m. May 17 GGB will hold their Spring Concert virtually via the BASD website; at 7 p.m. May 20 the Spring Showcase will be held in the high school auditorium; at 6:30 p.m. May 25 the Bradford Area High School Choral Concert; and at 7 p.m. on May 26 the Americana Concert will be held in the high school auditorium.
The next scheduled meeting of the Bradford Area School District will be held on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m.
