ELDRED — Cameron County rallied late, but Max Splain halted a 7th-inning rally, stranding the tying run at 2nd base.
The Red Raiders capitalized on three O-E errors, including one in the 7th, to keep pace despite a strong start from Terror right-hander Cal Minich. Splain then nailed down the 7th, securing a Northern Allegheny League victory for O-E to headline Monday baseball action.
Minich allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out eight in six innings pitched. Neither of the runs he allowed were earned, as the Red Raiders scored a pair in the 5th after a one-out infield error.
“(Minich) threw a really good game,” O-E coach Lance Baker said. “I’ve been wanting to use him more, and he proved me right with a quality outing. His curveball was great; he kept a lot of guys off-balance and pitched a lot backwards.”
Jesop Farabaugh reached on a grounder that scored Devon Cherry. One batter later, Hayden Brown’s RBI groundout gave CC its second run.
O-E, meanwhile, scored three runs in the 3rd, highlighted by RBI singles from Braden Maholic and Andrew Schenfield. Maholic had previously added an RBI on a fielder’s choice, giving him a pair on the evening.
“We got a lot of guys on, and like the story of our year, we left some runners on base,” Baker said. “(CC) made good plays in the field on some balls we hit hard.”
Jake Narby sparked a 7th-inning rally for CC with a one-out single. After Splain got a punchout, Farabaugh singled, setting up Brown to reach on an error and give the Red Raiders runners on 2nd and 3rd with the go-ahead run at the Splain.
Splain roared back with a strikeout, however, preventing the upset.
“We didn’t plan on going to (Splain), but we’re chasing wins right now to get eligible for the playoffs,” Baker said. “He’s the guy I want there, and that’s why we had him in there. The lefty-on-lefty matchup favored us, and got the strikeout.”
Manning Splain had two hits and an RBI for O-E, while Max Splain, Austin Cousins and Maholic each had a hit and a run. Narby led CC with two hits and two runs, while Farabaugh had a hit and an RBI.
O-E recognized seniors Maholic, Jacob Coffman and Wade Daniels before the game.
