WELLSVILLE, N.Y. — An inter-state softball matchup Monday night turned into a pitcher’s duel between Wellsville’s Makenzie Cowburn and Otto-Eldred’s Bri Heller.
Both pitchers marked double-digit strikeouts and had just one walk between them, but it was Cowburn’s team that emerged with a non-league win as the Lions held off the Terrors 3-1.
Cowburn struck out 16 batters with just one walk, holding O-E to two hits. Heller had 11 strikeouts and no walks.
Wellsville built a 3-0 lead after the fifth inning, needing some “small ball” to do it.
“In the second inning Makenna Dunbar hit a ball that I thought was out of the park,” said Lions coach Matt Burke, whose team ranks fourth in the state in Class B. “She put a really good swing on the ball and the wind kept it in. From that moment on it was apparent that we needed to play some small ball to get some runs across the plate.
“Makenzie Cowburn was electric tonight and defensively we made all the plays.”
For its first run, Wellsville got lead off runner Emma Dunaway on base in the fourth and moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt by Brazen Beckwith and a Cowburn single before Marissa Ordway brought her home with a squeeze bunt.
Wellsville tacked on two more in the fifth, with Marley Adams bringing in Sawyer Burke on an RBI single after Burke’s single, then Dunaway drove in Adams on a squeeze.
Dunbar also had a double for Wellsville (11-2).
Jessie Hall had an RBI single in the sixth for Otto-Eldred (2-1).
