HARRISBURG (TNS) — Pennsylvania’s health secretary will leave her post next week, just four months after taking the job, Gov. Tom Wolf’s office announced.
Acting Secretary of Health Keara Klinepeter will depart from the Department of Health on April 22, Wolf’s office said in a release. She will be replaced by Dr. Denise Johnson, who currently serves as the state’s physician general.
Dr. Johnson will be the fourth health secretary to lead the Department of Health since the first confirmed case of COVID-19 appeared in Pennsylvania in early 2020.
Klinepeter replaced former Acting Secretary Alison Beam, who left at the end of 2021 to lead UPMC’s lobbying efforts. Beam was preceded by Dr. Rachel Levine, who joined President Joe Biden’s administration as assistant secretary of health in January 2021.
Prior to her time as Pennsylvania’s top health official, Klinepeter worked as the deputy secretary and as a special adviser for the state’s COVID-19 response and vaccine roll-out.
”Keara has been an asset to the Department of Health and the Wolf Administration throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, providing necessary leadership and guidance to prepare for the endemic phase of the pandemic,” Wolf said in the release.
Sen. Jay Costa, D-Forest Hills, thanked Klinepeter for her leadership and said it was “beautiful” that the expectant mother was leaving to raise her child.
Dr. Johnson will do an “exceptional job” as the state’s top health official, Costa added.
”It’s a logical change, and I look forward to working with her,” Costa said.
In a statement, Johnson referenced the many ways the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the state and country.
”I am honored to lead the department during this transformative time in public health and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the tremendous employees at the Department of Health and ensuring our health remains a top priority throughout the commonwealth,” Johnson added
