The BRADFORD BRANCH of the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN met on Saturday, April 9 at the Church of the Nazarene.
After welcoming members and guests, Madeline Miles, vice president of programs, introduced Isabelle Champlin, who taught archeology and anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Over the years, Champlin has traveled the world to explore her passion for archeology. In 2019, she participated in an archeological field project on Easter Island, a territory of Chile located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is home to hundreds of enigmatic massive stone statues of human figures that have stood watch over the island landscape for hundreds of years. Champlin talked about the myths, theories and current research regarding the meaning of these iconic statues and the people who inhabited this mysterious and isolated island.
President Holly Spittler opened the business portion of the General Meeting by thanking the Hospitality Committee of Samila Sosic, Julie Stacey and Nancy Dryden. A motion to accept the slate of officers as presented by the Nominating Committee passed unanimously. The officers will be installed during the Annual Banquet in May and include President Patricia Stromberg; Recording Secretary Nancy Dryden; Assistant Treasurer Susan Hughes; and Program Vice President Madeline Miles. Faye Parisella will serve as corresponding secretary and handle Sunshine and Memorials for the upcoming year.
Terri Leven reminded members that the date of the Annual Banquet is Saturday, May 14, at 11:30 a.m. Cheryl Lutz thanked members for their generous donations of personal items, non-perishable food and cash for the Bradford YWCA. It was decided that AAUW will continue its fundraising efforts for the people of Ukraine by making and selling handmade blue and yellow dish cloths.
In other announcements, Spittler mentioned that Sosic’s show titled “Birds” will run from April 16 through May 14 at the Tri-County Arts Council Gallery in Olean, N.Y. Sosic teaches art at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and is an AAUW member.
