INDIANAPOLIS — Apparently the Bills still want Rob Gronkowski to return to his hometown.
According to Tim Graham of The Athletic, “there is hope at One Bills Drive that Gronkowski would be willing to finish his career in Western New York.”
The tight end grew up down the street in Amherst, and Buffalo also went after him in free agency last offseason to no avail.
“Nothing about Gronkowski’s 2021 production changed the Bills’ minds about what he can add to quarterback Josh Allen’s array of weapons, even after incumbent tight end Dawson Knox’s breakout season,” Graham wrote.
Gronkowski, who turns 33 in May, can become a free agent this spring. At the NFL Combine on Tuesday, Bruce Arians said he’s unsure of Gronkowski’s plans, but the tight end is still working out at the Buccaneers facility twice a week.
“We’ll see,” Arians said.
Gronkowski had long said that Tom Brady is the only quarterback he wanted to play with, but now that he’s finally retired, he might be open to different options. In a Q-and-A for Autograph NFTs last month, Gronkowski had a specific player in mind.
“I kinda like this young buck quarterback. He’s in the Super Bowl now: It’s Joe Burrow, man,” Gronkowski said. “I watched him in college. I just love the way he presents himself out on the football field. In the pocket he’s just so calm and he just slings it out on the field.
“I just love his swag, too. If I had to pick a quarterback it’d be the young buck Joe Burrow,” Gronkowski reiterated. “He’s killing it right now in the game.”
