ORWIGSBURG (TNS) — The second of two young brothers pulled from an icy pond in southern Schuylkill County has died, state police said Friday.
The younger of the two boys, identified by troopers only as a 4-year-old, was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon at Dupont Hospital for Children in Delaware, where he was flown Wednesday after initially being taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital.
His 5-year-old brother was pronounced dead Wednesday night in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Montour County.
According to troopers from the Schuylkill Haven station, rescue crews from the West Brunswick, Deer Lake and Orwigsburg fire companies responded Wednesday along with troopers to the property on Molino Road in West Brunswick Township where it was reported that two boys had fallen through ice on a pond.
When crews arrived, they learned the children’s mother saw her 4-year-old floating facedown in the pond. She went into the pond and pulled him out, but couldn’t see her other son.
The Schuylkill Haven Dive Team responded. Divers found the 5-year-old underwater and emergency personnel began lifesaving measures.
