ST. MARYS — Led by 17 points from Jerid Wilmoth, the Bradford boys basketball team pulled away from St. Marys in the second half before beating the Dutch, 40-33, and claiming a District 9 League road win Wednesday night.
Wilmoth scored three times during a third quarter that saw the Owl lead stretch from one point to six, and got help from teammates Dalton Dixon and Jake Franz, who each added seven points.
“You always like to get a league win,” Bradford coach John Bennardi said. “St. Marys did a nice job on our half-court offense and got some good looks, but in the second half we closed out their shooters better. Turnovers were key off the press, and we’ve gotten better at that since the first time we played them.”
Wilmoth proved to be dangerous with his mid-range game, as he scored on multiple 12-foot jumpers. Franz hit a late trey, as well, to give the Owls a boost.
“That’s what we need moving forward to beat these teams,” Bennardi said. “We’ve got four games left, and they’re all league games. I’m proud of our guys.”
Wednesday marked the second time the Owls have beat St. Marys this season, as they claimed a 39-27 decision at home earlier in the year.
“We got out to a faster start and did a better job with our press,” Bennardi said. “We were in foul trouble the whole game, and had kids come off the bench and clean up the mess. Hopefully, that got them experience and taught them how to win a game that close.”
Quinn Gavazzi led St. Marys with 11 points, while Anthony Nedzinski tacked on six. Bradford will face another tough league matchup Tuesday, when it hosts DuBois.
