BUFFALO MAN JAILED FOR POSSESSING GUN
A Buffalo, N.Y., man is in McKean County Jail for allegedly having a gun when a prior conviction prohibits him from doing so.
Donald Applewhite, 30, of 341 Landon St., is charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, a second-degree felony; and firearms not to be carried without a license, a third-degree felony.
At 6:07 p.m. Saturday, police were called to a Congress Street residence for an unwanted person. The caller told 9-1-1 that it was Applewhite, and he was most likely in possession of a firearm, the criminal complaint stated.
When officers arrived, Applewhite and another person were in a running vehicle in front of the residence. A pistol was found in the vehicle in a bag belonging to Applewhite, the complaint stated.
He was arraigned before District Judge Dom Cercone and remanded to jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 9.
PORT ALLEGANY WOMAN ARRAIGNED FOR ALLEGED FRAUD
A Port Allegany woman was arraigned Monday on allegations of food stamp fraud.
Alyssa Schoonover, 27, of 107 Katherine St., is charged with one count of fraudulently obtaining SNAP benefits, a third-degree felony.
According to the criminal complaint, from January to December of 2018, Schoonover failed to disclose her income when applying for SNAP benefits. The amount of restitution is $2,113, the complaint stated.
She was arraigned before District Judge Dom Cercone and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 9.
