PORT ALLEGANY — As Elizabeth Hungiville and Abby Lutz turned it on in the second half, the Smethport girls basketball team’s offense came alive.
After a slow offensive start by the Lady Hubbers, Hungiville and Lutz combined for 32 points, including 22 of which came in the second half, to lead Smethport over Port Allegany, 40-27.
“We picked it up in the third quarter, created some turnovers that led to extra possessions on offense and were able to stretch the lead out,” Smethport coach Chad Goodman said. “Games are won and lost in the third quarter.”
Smethport carried a 12-point lead into halftime of Friday’s victory, but hadn’t found its offensive stroke in the first 16 minutes. Lutz found her mark from beyond the arc in the second stanza, however, helping the Lady Hubbers combat Port’s stingy zone defense.
“(Lutz) shot the ball well from the perimeter,” Goodman said. “Their zone created some early problems for us, and against the zone, if the 3-ball isn’t going down, it’s tough to score. Abby got it going in the second half and stretched the floor for us a bit.”
Hungiville added seven rebounds and four steals to her stat line, while Coryn McClain pulled down nine rebounds.
Leigha Nelson led Port in scoring with eight points, while Ella Moses tacked on two points, six rebounds and three assists. Kayleigha Dowell added six points and nine rebounds.
“(Smethport is) a big and aggressive defensive team, and we struggled to match their physicality,” Port coach Jamie Evens said. “We didn’t do a very good job of taking care of the ball in the first half and never got in an offensive flow. But at halftime, we were in the game.”
Smethport improved to 7-5 overall and 7-3 in league play, as the Lady Hubbers aim to set themselves up for a playoff berth. Their recent performances, Goodman said, have been inspiring.
“I feel like we’re playing some of our best basketball right now, and we just need to keep building momentum here through the rest of the season.”

KANE — Hayden Brown could not be stopped, carrying Cameron County to an overtime win.
Brown had 32 points on the night and scored from all over. He made two 3-pointers, he scored six buckets in the paint and he shot 14-of-17 from the free throw line. Brown scored 10 points in the third quarter to turn a six point CC deficit into a one-point CC lead.
“(Brown) carried us down the stretch as he was pretty dominant down low,” said CC head coach Marcus Brown. “Everyone else played a great role around him.”
Kane was led by Andy Jekielek who scored 12 points. The team was more balanced, with Sam Lundeen adding seven and Jon Mishic and Landon Darr providing six points apiece.
But they didn’t have an answer for Brown, nor could they make the most of their trips to the charity stripe. The Red Raiders shot 16-for-24 from the line, while the Wolves went just 6-for-14.
