KANE — The Kane Historic Preservation Society announced the 200 birthday of town founder General Thomas Leiper Kane on Jan. 27, 2022.
General Kane’s 200th birthday provides an opportunity for a more in-depth focus and new revelations concerning his life’s work, not only for the community of Kane but also for the United States.
This celebration gives us the potential to share appreciation for the many gifts given to us by Thomas — not just physical gifts but ones of the spirit and dedication as well. Even after 200 years, many of his accomplishments are more relevant in today’s world than they were when first presented.
The society is planning a year-round celebration of General Kane’s birthday. It will memorialize his historic life as an American abolitionist, protector of the downtrodden, Civil War officer cited for gallant and distinguished service at Gettysburg, founder of the town of Kane, builder of the Kane Chapel, conceiver of the Kinzua Viaduct, and more. The Society intends to highlight the special connections between General Kane and his friendship with former Civil War General and President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant, who also celebrates his 200th birthday later this year.
The Kane Historic Preservation Society invites businesses, organizations, community members, and everyone interested in America’s past and future to join in celebrating and honoring 2022 as General Kane’s 200th birthday year.
