THINK BEFORE YOU GIFT: The Humane Society of Greater Savannah is one rescue that has shared “A Christmas Poem.” We have run it at length in the past but due to space constraints, that won’t be possible this year.
Instead, we share the following tips for those who are considering gifting a pet this holiday season.
— Always Ask First: Check with the intended recipient to see if they are capable both physically and financially of taking care of a puppy or kitten — and that they are willing to take on that extra responsibility. It is a good idea to think of others in the household as well.
— Give to immediate family only: While the look of joy when a child gets a kitten or puppy is tremendous, the parent who will be responsible for this furry friend may not be smiling.
— Consider gifting a gift certificate or note of adoption from your local animal shelter or rescue organization. Most organizations will be more than excited to work with you on this — knowing that it has a higher success rate as it ensures that the individual can adopt when ready and choose the best pet for their family.
—Consider giving a pet after the holidays if it’s something you are set on doing, as that is a less stressful time to begin new routines with a new dog or cat in the home.
Meanwhile, the poem, which is written in the style of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” shares the dream of well-loved dogs that have a happy home and St. Nick’s wish:
“He jumped in his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And off he then flew like the down on a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to All, and to Dogs a Good Life!”
