HARRISBURG (TNS) — The 2022 Bird of the Year will be announced in a reveal party hosted by the American Birding Association on Sunday in Philadelphia.
According to the Delaware-based organization, “We aren’t seeking the rarest, most endangered or most sought-after species, nor do we seek overexposed greeting card birds. We aim to pick species that are charismatic and accessible enough to be spark birds but that also remain favorites for those who have been into birding for years.
“On top of that, we want a conservation story to tell. And we strive to feature a variety of artists and a variety of visions and styles.”
The 2021 Bird of the Year is the pileated woodpecker; 2020, cedar waxwing; 2019, tropicbird; 2018, liwi; and 2017, ruddy turnstone.
In addition to the announcement, the reveal party will include a reception with Christina Baal, the Mamaroneck, New York, artist behind Drawing 10,000 Birds and the artist selected to produce the 2022 Bird of the Year cover art for the January issue of the ABA’s Birding magazine. On her way to a lifetime goal of producing art of 10,000 birds, Baal has observed 1,162 birds and painted 503.
“I have loved drawing and painting wildlife since I could hold a crayon, but discovering the world of birding changed everything,” she noted. “Growing up, I would copy photos and images that other people had taken.”
