BOYS NON-LEAGUE
Smethport 45, Kane 44
KANE — Smethport traveled to Kane for a non-league matchup, edging out a 45-44 victory that came down to the final seconds.
Alex Ognen led all scorers with 15 points for the Hubbers, pulling down seven rebounds as well.
“[Ognen] played really well. He’s our floor leader and he stepped up big, providing really good offense and playing really good defense,” said Hubbers head coach Jay Acker.
Brandon Higley and John Adamoski controlled the boards for Smethport, grabbing 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Kane was led by Jon Mishic, who scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
The Wolves fell behind by 15 heading into the fourth quarter but rallied late with an 18-4 advantage in the final period. Smethport missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw that gave Kane an opportunity to win it at the buzzer, but the Hubbers contested the last shot well enough to force a miss and secure the win.
“First game, you don’t really know what to expect, just hope your guys come out and play hard. Kane has gotten the better of us the last few years, so to start the year with a win like this over a good team is a great confidence booster for us. It gives us a nice boost going into another tough matchup Wednesday with Coudersport,” Acker said.
