The region is looking at a typical December week in terms of weather, but next weekend temperatures will be above normal for those scrambling to get their Christmas shopping done.
Kevin Fitzgerald, a meteorologist from the NWS State College office, explained that the cold front that moved into the area beginning Sunday night will bring rain showers. Current temperatures are a bit higher than normal.
“The average highs are in the upper 30s right now — sliding downward the rest of the month,” Fitzgerald stated. “Wednesday, highs near freezing are below normal. Thursday will be near normal with highs in the mid 30s.”
However, Fitzgerald said the rain showers will turn to snow tonight, which means a possibility of accumulation. He said it is a low chance and won’t be much, if we do get any.
However, Tuesday’s temperatures will drop to below normal, with highs in the upper 20s and near 30, which means Tuesday’s morning commute and Wednesday’s as well may include slippery spots on untreated roadways.
The rest of the week, there is one other chance of real light snow, according to Fitzgerald, and that is on Thursday night.
“It’s typical up and down, a few days below normal and then significantly above normal for next weekend,” Fitzgerald said.
For those looking ahead to plan their shopping excursions, the weekend brings warmer temperatures.
“There are much warmer conditions moving in for the weekend, with highs into the 50s on Saturday,” Fitzgerald said. He noted there will be no major issues in terms of travel.
