A man died in Warren County Saturday afternoon after being shot by a companion while bear hunting, according to reports.
ErieNewsNow reports that the Pennsylvania Game Commission is investigating the shooting that occurred on State Game Lands 197 in Columbus Township, Warren County.
Gary R. Hunt, 64, was killed during the shooting, by a 42-year-old fellow hunter who was not identified, ErieNewsNow reports.
The early investigation determined the pair was hunting bear shortly after noon when the younger man crossed a creek in front of Hunt and tripped or slipped, the outlet reports.
This caused the fellow hunter to discharge a .270-caliber rifle behind him, Game Commission officials reported.
Hunt was hit by a bullet in the abdomen, ErieNewNow reports. Rescuers were called for someone in cardiac arrest but found Hunt dead from the gunshot wound when they arrived.
The investigation was ongoing.
