The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men’s basketball team used a late 20-4 run to pick up their third road win of the season, beating Keuka 106-85.
The contest got off to a tight start as the two teams swapped the lead seven times in the opening seven minutes of play. With 13:17 to go in the half, Nathan Schneider made a basket inside to put the Panthers ahead for the final time. The basket was the second field goal of a 16-0 run that saw the Panthers turn a four point deficit into a 12-point lead. In the run, Isaiah Archie scored seven points.
With 6:35 to go in the half, Alex Rodriguez converted a four-point play to put the Panthers up 15, but the Wolves were able to respond, scoring seven straight to get back to within single digits. Pitt-Bradford extended their advantage back to 12 points by halftime, as Archie scored eight of the Panthers’ final 11 in the half.
After the break, the teams traded baskets for the opening 10 minutes, as the Panther lead fluctuated between nine and 14 points. With 9:18 to go, the Wolves began a comeback that would see them cut the lead down to as few as five. Archie made two more layups in a two minute span, but it was surrounded by two Keuka threes and two free throws, which saw the lead shrink to 83-78.
Lennon Lindholm hit a three from the corner, which started the late 20-4 run for the Panthers. The Panthers held the Wolves scoreless from the field for five minutes, which allowed Pitt-Bradford to get out into transition. In the same span, the Panthers scored on 10 of 12 possessions putting the game away.
Archie set a new career-high in the game, scoring 36 points. He shot 10-15 from the field and made 16-22 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists while committing only one turnover.
Schneider put in another impressive performance. He scored 28 points on 12-16 from the field while making all four of his free throw attempts. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, marking his third double-double in four games.
Rodriguez was the only other Panther to finish in double figures. He scored 12 points in the game, making three of four from beyond the arc and three out of three from the line.
The win moves the Panthers to 3-1 on the season. They will have a week off before they return to action next Saturday, Nov. 27, when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to play in the Harold J. Brodie Tournament. They will take on the hosts R.I.T. on Saturday, before playing a second game on Sunday, with the matchup yet to be determined. Tipoff for Saturday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s basketball team fell in its final game before the Thanksgiving Break, losing 84-64 to Fredonia.
The Panthers’ offense got off to a slow start as they were unable to score until 3:16 into the game when Hannah Lary made a layup inside. After the Lary bucket, the Panthers continued to struggle on the offensive end as the Blue Devils built a 17-6 lead.
Following a timeout, the Panthers were able to whittle the lead down to just four points. Daizjah Brown started the run, driving inside to make a layup. After a Panther defensive stop, Cailey Barnett hit a three from the wing to get the deficit to seven. With 11 seconds left in the quarter, Brown hit a three after a Cassidy King steal to end the period down 18-14.
Once in the second period, the visitors shut down the Panther offense, leading them to a 14-2 run to begin the quarter. Lary hit four free throws to slow the momentum, but Fredonia was able to outscore the Panthers 29-10 in the quarter to go to the half with a 23 point lead.
The Panthers were unable to make any headway cutting into the lead in the third period as each basket they made on the offensive end was matched by Fredonia. Brown scored six of the Panthers 18 points in the quarter, all of them coming from mid range jumpers.
Pitt-Bradford was able to gain some momentum in the fourth quarter, as despite the large deficit, they were able to outscore the Blue Devils by five points in the final period. Seven different Panthers scored in the quarter, led by Brown who had five.
Brown led all scorers with 18 points. She shot eight for 15 from the field, including one for three from beyond the arc. Barnett scored 15 for the Panthers, while Lary added 11, and King scored 10. King was one rebound shy of a double-double as she finished with nine.
The Panthers fell to 2-3 on the season after the loss. They will have a week off for the holiday, before heading to Harrisburg to play in the Pride-Spirit-Honor Tournament. They will take on the hosts, Penn State-Harrisburg in the opener on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. and then play a second game the following day.
