RETIREMENT: We’re taking a moment today to report some news on one of our own.
Fran DeLancey, who has been The Era’s Smethport correspondent for 43 years, has retired.
Fran is perhaps one of our best known reporters, as he taught for many years in Smethport and is involved in the Democratic Party, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Smethport, the McKean County Fair Association and Smethport Fire Department, to name a few.
His humor is legendary.
“One of my favorite things about Fran is his sense of humor,” said Assistant Managing Editor Marcie Schellhammer. “He would make a typo in a story, and sometimes it would become a newsroom legend.
“Once, he wrote that the fire department served snakes to children who were there on a tour. No wonder the child in the accompanying photo looked scared,” Marcie said with a laugh.
She also noted that Fran started at The Era when she was in kindergarten.
The Era staff will greatly miss Fran and his humor. Happy retirement, Fran!

NEED: Have some spare time and a desire to help those less fortunate?
The Salvation Army Bradford Corps needs volunteers to man the Red Kettle for the annual campaign. Kettles are set up at Tops Market, Walmart grocery and Walmart retail, Save A Lot and Big Lots.
The funds given in “the red kettles of The Salvation Army help fund the life-transforming programs and services that provide food, shelter, rehabilitation, disaster relief, rent and utilities assistance, and much more for our community’s most vulnerable.”
