The annual Scholastic Quick Chess Championship was held in the cafeteria and library at School Street Elementary School on Wednesday evening.
In the Novice section, Natasha Ferry, a sophomore from Warren Area High School, won all her games to become the champ.
Other top finishers in this year’s Novice event included third grader Andon Troisi from School Street Elementary School, who captured second place, having lost only to Natasha. Gavin Weart, also from School Street, won third place, and fourth honors were a tie between sophomore Zech Waterman and second grader Elaina Ferguson.
In the Reserve section of the Bradford 2021 Quick Chess Championship, Jamin Bell, a sixth grader at Fretz Middle School, won all his games to claim first place overall. Kadyn Tessena, also a student at Fretz, took second place after a close loss to Jamin. Third honors were a tie between Aiden Ferguson, a sixth grader from Olean, Juliana Bysiek, 2nd grader from Allegany, and Owen Troisi, 8th grader from Fretz Middle School in Bradford.
The Novice section was directed by Ron Buchheit with assistance from Jessica Kramer and Larry Causer. Ryan and Bob Ferguson directed the Reserve division, composed of students who have competed in the Pennsylvania State Scholastic Championship.
The 31st Annual Bradford Businessmen’s Chess League begins next week at School Street Elementary. More than 20 teams are registered to play.
