Blessing boxes, installed to help the Otto-Eldred community, provide several locations with items available for those in need and are well-supported by the community as a whole.
Martha Baker shared that, since the boxes were installed in March, all eight locations seem to be used regularly and respectfully — for the most part.
“There have been many learning experiences in the past seven months,” Baker said. “The issue that most weighed on my mind was the fact that a person or two from another community was emptying several of our boxes multiple times a week, often leaving nothing in the boxes for others to choose from. I hope and believe this is no longer an issue.”
She also explained that the community has shown tremendous support for the project. The Otto-Eldred school district has participated from the very beginning, from painting the boxes, to collecting items and money to cleaning the boxes and getting rid of outdated items.
Baker explained the program has been helpful in providing not only food items but hygiene items, cleaning supplies, pet food, paper products and socks, hats and gloves. This is also thanks to assistance from the school district.
“The students, faculty and staff have all been so supportive and helpful. I am so grateful,” Baker said. “To just say ‘Thank you’ seems insufficient, but I don’t know what else to say! We live in a very special and caring community!”
Baker noted that anyone interested in donating can drop off items at any of the boxes or at 2 Bennett Street in Eldred. Donations can also be mailed to Box 379, Eldred, PA.
An account has also been set up at the Hamlin Bank in Eldred.
“Just when I begin to worry about donations, someone will drop items or money off — and always with an encouraging word!” Baker said.
