Smethport 28, Cameron County 0
EMPORIUM — Smethport ran over Cameron County to the tune of 271 yards on the ground and just 32 through the air.
CC had just 61 yards total on the night. While the Red Raiders had some success moving the ball early on, adjustments from the Hubbers allowed Smethport to control the game for the rest of the night.
“They tried to get the ball to the edge early in the game and had a little bit of success with that,” said head coach Adam Jack. “We made an adjustment and shut that down. Once they got down, they tried to go to the air.”
Ryan Mason and Noah Lent dictated the game on offense, with Lent running for three touchdowns and 157 yards, while Mason had 123 yards. Alex Ognen had one catch, but it went for 26-yards and a touchdown.
On defense, the Hubbers showed their mettle in an important spot. CC blocked a second-quarter punt and had the ball in Smethport territory.
But two plays later, Aiden McKean saw opportunity knock and intercepted Maddox Baughman’s pass, taking it 35 yards before being tackled. The pick led to the Hubbers scoring and going up three touchdowns, a commanding first-half lead.
Smethport won handily, but it was an important game nonetheless.
“We talked to the kids all week about this being essentially the North title game and that CC was a much improved program,” Jack said. “I thought we did a good job of controlling our offense and keeping them in check.”
It was a physical affair throughout, both teams knew how big this game was.
“I thought that they played a very aggressive and physical game,” said Jack. “Coach Neyman and his staff had those kids ready to play and they have nothing to be ashamed of when they played like that.”
Smethport’s win helps the Hubbers keep hold of their lead in the Small School North, and while Cameron County needs to rebound next week, their 4-2 record gives them an inside track to being a playoff team.
