The month of October at the Bradford Area Public Library is full of fun, fall-themed programs and activities for area residents.
For residents who are looking for spooky fun to get ready for Halloween, the library has a program for that.
Witches are one of the most traditional as well as mysterious entities we associate with Halloween. The origin of the word, witch, isn’t entirely known, but it’s thought that the word meant “wise one.”
Ehris and Velya Urban, of the Grounded Good Wife duo, will delve into the history of witches and Halloween in If the Broom Fits, via Zoom on at 6 p.m. Oct. 20. Registration is necessary to receive the Zoom link/password for this engaging program.
Another option will be to enjoy the Creepy Crawlies program at 11 a.m. on October 11 with Michael Morton, if you dare. Morton plans to bring his creepiest creatures from the Sun-Dance-Kids-Farm to display in the library’s Community Room.
Penn State Extension nutritionist, Laurie Maletto, is returning for another 5-week session of Kulinary Kids beginning at 5 p.m. Oct. 20. This program is geared for students in fourth through eighth grades. Registration is required, as families will receive grab-n-go bags that contain cooking ingredients and the special Zoom link/password to join Maletto virtually every Wednesday.
Meanwhile, throughout the month of October area youth, aged 12 to 18, will be able to participate in a Teen Creative Writing Contest. Teenagers are encouraged to submit a fall-themed creative writing project of ten pages or less by October 30 to be in the running to win a $25 gift card.
While older area youth can express their creative side with a writing project, the library is also sponsoring a contest for youth under aged 12 to showcase their creativity through coloring. Area youth, aged 0 to 12, are encouraged to enter the library’s Coloring Contest by submitting a fall-themed picture by Oct. 30. A $25 gift card will be awarded to the winner.
School-aged children who have creative works they wish to share with others are asked to participate in the Creative Youth program on Oct. 12. Area youth in grades 3 through 7 will present their story, poem, music, art or pictures at 5 p.m. while grades 8 through 12 will present at 5:45 p.m. Registration is required for this in-person program. To register, call the library or email youth@bradfordlibrary.org.
Programs at the library are not just for children, October has some fun programs for adults as well.
Professional chef Rob Scott is returning to the library, virtually at noon Oct. 16 for an Autumn Baked Goods program. With the cooler temperatures arriving at our doors, now is the perfect time to warm up those ovens and fill our kitchens with the wonderful aromas of baked goods!
Chef Rob, of Hamptons Bay, New York, will be sharing two great recipes: Harvest Pumpkin Coffee Cake and Apple Pie Streusel Bread. Participants are invited to download the recipes from the Bradford Library’s website: bradfordlibrary.org, and prepare the dishes alongside Chef Rob. As the program will be streamed via Zoom, participants can have their questions answered live, in real-time.
Learn about a new form of working out before enjoying treats from the Halloween holiday with a free, in-person yoga program at the library. Local yoga instructor, Kathy Wright, will lead the yoga sculpt program at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 and 25. This program will also stream live on the library’s Facebook page.
Yoga sculpt combines the benefits of traditional yoga with strength training utilizing light weights or just body weight. Individuals who wish to participate will need a yoga mat and 1, 2, or 3 pound weight. Class length is 30 minutes.
On Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Taffy Meyer will be demonstrating how to create and craft paper beads. The hand-made beads can then be used to create jewelry and other projects. Participation is limited to 12, call the library to register or email marketing@bradfordlibrary.org.
