VIRTUAL STEAM ON THE RAILS: Students and teachers will join the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania for its virtual STEAM On The Rails event on Oct. 19 and 21. This special school program is designed for children in grades K through 6 to learn about the role of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) in their daily lives.
Students will watch live demonstrations and programs through Zoom including how levers and pulleys work, and how a steam locomotive works. The program will be held on two days with four, 30-minute presentations each day. Program partners are the National Canal Museum, the Anthracite Heritage Museum, Eckley Miners’ Village Museum, the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum and blacksmith Frank Gillespie.

Oct. 19 will feature the following programs: 10 a.m. EST: The Steam Locomotive (Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania); 10:30 a.m. EST: Canals vs. Railroads (National Canal Museum); 2 p.m. EST: Coal-fired Pizza Oven Demonstration (Anthracite Heritage Museum) and 2:30 p.m. EST: Blacksmithing Demonstration (Frank Gillespie).
Programs set for Oct. 21: 10 a.m. EST: Hands-On Art Program (Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania); 10:30 a.m. EST: Logging’s Simple Machines (Pennsylvania Lumber Museum); 2 p.m. EST: The Diesel-Electric Locomotive (Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania) and 2:30 p.m. EST: The Electric Locomotive (Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania).
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a world-class collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center, a vast research library and archives, special events and exhibits and a Museum store.
