TWO UNDEFEATED TEAMS: John Rimer of Bradford submitted a memory of his own about the 1971 Bradford team.
He wrote, “Tuesday’s ‘Round the Square had an article about the Owls going undefeated in 1971. I remember it well. I was a firefighter and a PIAA football official — and Fred’s right-hand man. So when he asked me to write an article for The Era the Saturday of the final game in Olean, I was pleased to.
“I had to work that Saturday and couldn’t attend the game. About 10 minutes after the game, a call came into the station requesting the truck to escort the team through the city. Chief Shay selected me to drive the truck. So my day was complete with a victory trip.
But while the Owls were going unbeaten using Smethport’s field for home games, the BCCHS Ramblers were doing the same, using Otto-Eldred for their home field. The city made national news with two unbeaten teams and no home field. Quite an achievement.”

TODAY: National Punctuation Day commemorates all punctuation: a period, a comma, a semicolon, a question mark, and an exclamation point are examples of punctuation. They separate sentences and their elements to clarify meaning. Without them, meaning would be lost or up for interpretation.
Seek out unique ways to punctuate your sentences today, or try a few of these suggestions:
— To avoid punctuation altogether, just complete crossword puzzles all day. They don’t use any punctuation.
— Open up a debate about the Oxford comma online. It may get as heated as a political debate.
— Try using every type of punctuation throughout the day.
— Create a painting or collage of your favorite punctuation marks.
— Make meatloaf and form the loaves into punctuation shapes.
