SMETHPORT — A Port Allegany man was arraigned Monday on allegations that he was concealing a folding knife and lighter in his underwear while sitting in the holding cell of the McKean County Jail.

James J. Jones IV, 36, is charged with two counts of contraband prohibited: weapons brought into institution, both felonies and two counts of inmate procure etc. self with weapon, both first-degree misdemeanors.

According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 3:49 p.m. on Aug. 9, police were dispatched to McKean County Jail for a report that an inmate was concealing a folding knife and a lighter inside his underwear. Once on the scene, police met with McKean County Sheriff Dan Woods, who said he had video footage of Jones pulling a folding knife out of his underwear while sitting inside the holding cell. Jones also had a lighter concealed and attempted to burn the door in the holding cell.

After reviewing the camera footage, it was determined Jones did have a folding knife and lighter concealed in his underwear, according to the complaint.

Jones was arraigned before District Judge William Todd and bail was set for $20,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled before Todd on Sept. 7.
