A blaze destroyed a home under renovation just outside of Kane Borough early Tuesday along U.S. Route 6.
Kane Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Bressler said the fire at 5629 Route 6 in Wetmore Township was called in at 6:49 a.m. by a neighbor, but likely had been burning for some time before that. “It was so foggy this morning people could smell smoke but not tell where it was coming from.
“The house is a total loss,” he said, estimating the loss at more than $200,000.
“The main portion of the fire was in the attic area,” he explained. “It was a stubborn fire and with it being so hot and humid, it was hard on the personnel.”
Eight departments were dispatched — Kane, Mount Jewett, Hazel Hurst, Lafayette Township, Wilcox, Johnsonburg, Ludlow and Sheffield.
There were no injuries, the chief said.
“We had to shut the road down and it was shut down until almost noon,” Bressler said of Route 6.
Approximately 50 firefighters were on the scene from about 7 a.m. until around noon.
Bressler said the cause of the fire has been ruled as undetermined, and accidental in nature.
