ZIPPO ‘SIGHTING’: Era reader Terry Palmer submitted the following tidbit from Sirius XM 60’s radio heard recently.
“Steve Cropper, session guitarist for Stax Records and member of Booker T & the Memphis Group, was guest DJ. He was talking about some of the records that he had been involved in. Steve said that he is often asked what was the most difficult recording that he had ever done.
He answers “Soul Man” (Sam & Dave 1967), a seemingly straight forward song. He explains that during a recording session he likes to stand up and move with the music. For “Soul Man,” he was using a Zippo lighter for the slide guitar parts and set it on his knee when he wasn’t playing slide, forcing him to sit for the entire session.
