RIDGWAY — In the second quarter of this year, the Elk County Sheriff’s office collected 163.2 pounds of unused medications for destruction.
So far this year, the office has collected 263.9 pounds. Since the program’s inception in September 2016, 3,853.6 pounds have been collected.
Collection boxes are at all law enforcement stations in Elk County: the sheriff’s office at the courthouse in Ridgway, Ridgway police station at 108 Main St., St. Marys police station at 319 Erie Ave., Johnsonburg police station at 100 Main St., and the state police barracks at 48 Servidea Drive in Ridgway.
Unused medications can be deposited at any location. Citizens can black out or remove any labels or identification on the containers. Confidentiality is strictly maintained.
The unused medication is turned over to the Pennsylvania National Guard and agents from the state attorney general’s office for destruction.
