MCGRUFF: McGruff the Crime Dog is celebrating his birthday this month. McGruff debuted on ABC Schooled in 1980, a year after Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising executive Jack Keil created him. Keil also voiced the character when he debuted.
The celebration of his birthday began July 1 and will continue until August. The hashtag #McGruffBirthday2021 is being used on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Those interested can follow his posts through the month-long celebration.
McGruff’s efforts to fight crime have expanded to include counterfeit games and the theft of intellectual property, a testament to his flexibility over the years of representing the National Crime Prevention Council and efforts to increase personal safety and crime awareness across the nation.
McGruff had $100 million in free air time donated in the first year of his existence, which was successful in reaching over 50% of adults. McGruff campaigns continued over the years, covering child abduction, robbery, anti-drug messages, and anti-bullying campaigns.
Remember that October is Crime Prevention Month, so while McGruff celebrates his birthday in July, his favorite month is October.
