PATRIOTIC: The Fourth of July is the time of year when patriotic films are popular with viewers, so says a study by the website Comparitech.
They researched the most popular patriotic films for each state. Any guesses what won in Pennsylvania?
If you guessed Gettysburg, you were right! The film, of course, is about the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War.
New York state’s popular patriotic film was Allegheny Uprising, featuring John Wayne.
Some states went for films from their own backyard, like Georgia and Alabama for Forrest Gump, Hawaii went for Pearl Harbor, and Texas for The Alamo.
Some states picked recent films, like Vermont choosing Captain America: Civil War, and Idaho and Wisconsin picking American Sniper.
Kentucky didn’t; those residents chose the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind. And in Montana, the 1942 film Yankee Doodle Dandy. New Jersey and Florida both went with with 1951 film Jim Thorpe — All-American.
The site also noted that Washington, D.C., had numerous top picks, all with a political theme, including Lincoln, Vice and The American President. However, the top pick was Hamilton.
California’s choice was the lowest rated of all the films on the list — XXX: State of the Union. The highest rated was Forrest Gump.
The site noted, “Fun fact: Almost a third of the films we surveyed were so patriotic they’ve got the American flag in the movie poster. And 35% of states prefer to celebrate their patriotism with a war movie.
