The number of Pennsylvanians eligible to be vaccinated has continued to grow, with now everyone age 12 and older eligible for the shot. But what steps should people under 12 be taking in the meantime?
Pennsylvania officials have offered guidance for parents to keep their children safe as the state opens up and adults shed their masks. The information is from the state Department of Health, the state Department of Human Services and DHS’s Office of Child Development and Early Learning.
Children ages 2 to 12 should continue to wear face coverings in public settings and anywhere indoors where they will be around people who do not live in their household. Children under age 2 should not wear face coverings.
“If a child is unable to wear a face covering, the CDC recommends more low-risk activities, such as enjoying activities outdoors with members of their household or attending a small, outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated family and friends,” said a statement from officials.
“Risk of COVID-19 infection increases if unvaccinated children gather from multiple households; therefore, the safest place to visit is outdoors. Children, regardless of age, with underlying medical conditions may also be at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19 compared to other children.”
Social distancing — in addition to face coverings — is also recommended for indoor activities. Children should stay home if they tested positive for COVID-19 or were exposed to COVID-19 within the last 14 days.
All children, regardless of age or vaccination status, should continue to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Parents are reminded to make sure children cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze, and they should continue to take children to routine doctor appointments.
