SMETHPORT — Smethport Borough Council agreed Monday to accept the bid of $2,600 for the sale of the municipality’s 1996 street sweeper.
David Chutz of Slippery Rock was the winning bidder.
In another financial matter, Council approved a motion to split the cost of cleaning, sealing and repainting the lines on the tennis courts in Hamlin Lake Park with the Smethport Rotary Club, with each group paying $862.50. Daniel Carter Inc. of Allegany, N.Y., will be the contractor.
In his report to Council, Kevin Seipp of the borough’s police department told about a suggestion to open borough streets to ATVs, snowmobiles and side-by-sides. Seipp said that he checked with police departments in Port Allegany and Coudersport, where this is permitted and was informed that there have been few problems.
Borough council could permit this through a resolution instead of an ordinance according to the borough solicitor, Seipp added.
Council OKd the painting of the electric department’s bucket truck before it is inspected.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has contacted the borough to reopen negotiations for wages, benefits and working conditions.
Smethport American Legion Commander Pat Miesowitz attended the meeting and informed council of the Legion’s project of improving the parking area on its property next to the borough right-of-way on Lone Alley to alleviate a flooding problem.
Borough Safety Officer Bob Funk reported the sewer department truck is now equipped with a five-pound fire extinguisher.
Also, Funk reported that all 16 flower urns along Main Street have been “adopted” by residents or merchants.
According to Funk, when the Smethport Garden Club, which originally cared for the urns, disbanded, there was a possibility that the urns would be put in storage.
Instead of that happening, Funk said he would secure people to take over the urns’ care. “When we announced the need, the response was overwhelming,” he said. “We could have filled many more urns.”
Jeannie Mechanye, with the support of JR Lawncare and Garden, planted the flower arrangement at the Water Street entrance to Hamlin Lake Park. Ethel Coldren and Nina Burdick planted the other arrangement in the park.
After an executive session, council returned to the public agenda and voted to have Cox Surveying do a survey.
