A St. Marys man died in a two-vehicle accident Sunday evening.
Mark A. Rhines Jr., 34, of St. Marys, was thrown from the all-terrain vehicle he was driving and died, according to Ridgway-based state police.
Police reported that at 738 p.m. Sunday, Rhines was traveling south on Market Road on an ATV, while a sport utility vehicle driven by Cory A. Cannella, 30, of St. Marys, was traveling north. The ATV moved to the middle of the road and struck the SUV in the left front.
Due to the impact, Rhines was thrown from the ATV, police said. Cannella was not injured.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, according to police.
Wilcox ambulance, fire department and fire police assisted on scene.
Following the accident, area fire departments took to social media to share their condolences for Rhines. He was reported to be an EMT for the St. Marys Ambulance Service, a dispatcher for the Elk County 911 Center and owner of Rhines Logistics.
The St. Marys Ambulance Service remembers Rhines this way in a Facebook post: “Mark was always willing to help anyone and he was one of our staff members you could count on to always be there when needed.”
Likewise, the Elk County Office of Emergency Services said this in a statement online: “When Mark wasn’t tending those in need, you could find him in his office where he worked full-time as a successful entrepreneur. After a busy workday, Mark could be found spending time with his family.”
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ridgway-based state police at 814-776-6136.
