CANDY: What day isn’t a good day to enjoy some sweet treats? Whether you look forward to Cadbury eggs at Easter or enjoy a box of Milk Duds at the theater, most of us have a favorite candy. Well, these sweet confectioneries have the entire month of June dedicated to them, as June is National Candy Month.
Founded by the National Confectioners Association, National Candy Month was first observed in January of 1974 after it was seen that candy sales would often drop after a busy holiday season and individuals made New Year’s resolutions restricting their diets. The observance moved to May and then eventually was moved to June.
According to the National Confectioners Association, the top three summer candy flavors are strawberry, watermelon and cherry, while the top three summer candy types are chocolate, gummies and hard candy.
Other random facts on the NCA’s website were that 94% of Americans going camping this summer will bring candy with them, 93% bring candy on road trips and 89% of beachgoers enjoy indulging in some chocolate or other candies.
So how does one celebrate National Candy Month? Why not support a local business by buying some candy? For example, the Bradford Chocolate Factory on Main Street in Bradford is currently having a special on their mouth watering taffy from Taffy Town. The Taffy Town flavor of the month for June is root beer float. Taffy isn’t all the establishment has in store though.
“We have lots of best sellers, including our chocolate sponge candy in a variety of flavors, homemade chocolate popcorn pizzas, nostalgic candy and of course all of our variety of chocolates in our 12 foot humidity controlled display cases,” said Tim Gigliotti, co-owner.
