Bradford City Council approved three part-time firefighters/EMTs during Tuesday’s meeting.
Council voted unanimously to approve the recommendation of Fire Chief Eric Taylor, authorizing the appointment of Drew Shreve, Mike McConnel and Tyler Blair as part-time firefighters, pending completion of required physicals.
In other business, council approved the filing of a Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP) Grant in the amount of $213,635 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority to be used for the Callahan Park Playground Improvements Phase I. A previous resolution on the same topic, dated May 11, was rescinded prior to the approval.
Councilman Brad Mangel reminded city residents that the city has a code regarding open burning and that burning must be done in a fire pit that meets the criteria set forth by the Bradford City Fire Department. Mangel reminded residents that a permit must be acquired from the city fire department prior to having a fire. Also, there are certain things city residents are prohibited from burning.
“There is no excuse in the city of Bradford for burning limbs, branches, leaves, grass,” Mangel said. He noted that the city’s Department of Public Works accepts this type of yard waste.
“I’ve had older residents ask me about that,” Mangel said. “They don’t have a truck, they will put it in their back seat in a bag or their trunk. If you need a truckload, there’s people out there that’ll haul it.”
Mangel noted he was partly responsible for the open burning ordinance, which is intended to protect the health of the people of Bradford from pollution.
Mangel also explained that the Department of Property Maintenance and Inspection expressed gratitude to all landlords who have applied online. He stated that city residents are also reminded that complaints can be submitted online. The contact information is for the city employees in the event they need further information, and the information will otherwise be kept completely confidential.
