With the New York State football season only recently having ended, the third group of players in the Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic is from Pennsylvania.
Game No. 47, set for Aug. 1 last summer, was cancelled due to coronavirus concerns. Thus, it’s been reset for this year on Aug. 7 at Bradford’s Parkway Field.
Matching graduated seniors from each side of the Big 30 border, New York leads the series 22-21-1, though Pennsylvania hasn’t lost since 2015. Formerly known as the Don Raabe Big 30 All-Star Game, in its first 46 renewals, it has raised over $1.7 million for area charities.
Today, there are 10 additions to the Pennsylvania roster, bringing its squad to 20 players.
Named today were Bradford’s Kyle McWillians, Kane’s Zuke Smith and Bobby Rumcik, Eisenhower’s Owen Trumbull and Dillon Benson as well as Port Allegany’s Derek Kallenborn, Sheffield’s Jake Davidson, Ridgway’s Dominic Cherry, Elk County Catholic’s Sam Kaul and Warren’s James Swanson.
McWILLIAMS was a 5-foot-10, 225 pound offensive guard/defensive tackle who was twice named the Owls’ Lineman of the Year.
An honor student he will attend Triangle Tech in Dubois for computer-aided design /drafting.
His favorite football memory was “the Ridgway game that was competitive till the last whistle.”
Smith was a 6-6, 195-pound quarterback/defensive back who was a District 9 All-Star and will play in the Varischetti Game All-Star shortly before the Charities Classic.
He was also Kane’s Rookie of the Year in basketball and was named Defensive Player of the Year last season.
Smith will attend Alfred University, major in mechanical engineering, and play football.
His favorite football moment was “catching a 95-yard touchdown pass against Ridgway.”
Rumcik was a 6-1, 185-pound wide receiver-tight end/safety who was a two-time District 9 All-Star. A member of the National Honor Society, he will attend Penn State and major in chemistry/pre-med to become an anesthesiologist.
Rumcik earned a National Football Foundation- Central Pa. Chapter- Scholar-Athlete Award.
Of playing in the Charities Classic, he said, “I’ve always looked up to those players who have played in the game before me. I’ve gone to all the games since I was in middle school.”
His favorite football memories were “scoring my first touchdown in my first varsity game and Coach Silfies’ pre-game speeches.”
Trumbull was a 6-4, 180-pound quarterback/safety who was Region 5 Player of the Year last fall and was a three-time regional all-star. He was also a District 10 small-school all-star on defense.
Trumbull will attend Thiel College and major in environmental science.
Of the Charities Classic, he said, “It’s an honor to play in the Big 30 Game because not everyone gets to play. I’m also carrying on a family tradition as my father and two uncles played in the Charities Classic.”
His favorite football memory was “beating West Middlesex at home in double overtime for an opportunity to play in the D-10 championship game.”
Benson was a 5-11, 170-pound wide receiver/safety who was Offensive MVP as a junior and a Region 5 All-Star as a senior. He also was named to the Jim Kelly District 10 All-Star team and was second-team all-state.
He will attend Allegheny College to play football and study physics and engineering.
Benson is “very proud of my football skills and I want to show them off against the best athletes in our area.”
His favorite memory was “going undefeated in the regular season and making the D-10 championship game.”
Kallenborn was a 5-11, 210-pound center/defensive end who will attend Penn College for collision-repair technology.
Cherry was a 5-9, 160-pound running back-wide receiver/cornerback who will attend Mansfield University and major in computer information and science.
Davidson was a 5-11, 190-pound two-way tackle who will join the steam-fitters program after graduation.
He’s looking forward to playing in the Charities Classic “to meet other players and coaches and get the chance to play one last game.”
His favorite memory playing football was “winning our Homecoming Game my junior year.”
Kaul was a 5-9, 150-pound slot back/cornerback who was the Crusaders’ Most Outstanding Player as a junior and a two-time Big 30 and District 9 All-Star. Last fall, he received the Bill Gapinski Memorial Award and was selected to the Coaches Select All-Star Team.
He will attend Penn State-Behrend and major in engineering.
His favorite football memory was “playing for the best coaches and teammates over the past four years.”
Swanson was a 5-10, 180-pound running back/linebacker.
He has yet to choose a college but says “playing in the Big 30 Game is my favorite part of football and being able to play with my long-time friends.”
